The Michael Flatley of Sean-Nos Dancing (RTE-TV)

Hailing from Connemara, Brian Cunningham is the most exciting sean-nós or ‘old-style’ dancer to have emerged from Ireland. At 31 years of age, he has won all the major dance competitions in Ireland, and was honored with an invitation by the President of Ireland to perform during an Official State visit to Japan and South Korea in 2005. In addition to dancing, Brian choreographs and produces for shows such as ‘Fuaim Chonamara’ and ‘Atlantic Steps’, and teaches workshops internationally for aspiring dancers of all ages.

Brian is part of the well-known Cunningham family of dancers, regularly perform alongside Irish greats including Dé Danann, The Chieftains, Sharon Shannon, Altan, Dervish & Téada. The Galway natives have already toured to huge acclaim in Korea while accompanying President Mary McAleese on an Official State visit, while Brian is a three-time winner at the prestigious Oireachtas na Samhna.

A Different Style of Irish Dance

Sean Nós dancing is highly improvisational, low to the ground, rhythmic dancing in which the performer is free to interpret the music. It is believed that American tap and Appalachian Clog Dancing can trace their heritage back to the Sean Nós dancing steps and styles of west Galway. Unlike step dancing (where the dancer is the focus), sean-nós dancers are part of the music, providing percussion with their feet. Each dancer has their own style and steps, which they will combine in their own unique way to each song -- no two performances are alike!
